A wide variety of modalities of communication including telephones, email, e-consultation platforms, internet video and other varieties of consulting are more readily available to GPs and patients. Increasingly, GPs and GP trainees are using e-consultations or email-based platforms to assess and manage patients' problems. The use of e-consultations has surged since the COVID-19 outbreak. As we do not have formal training or teaching sessions on how to conduct and manage e-consultations, my trainer and I have been spending approximately half our tutorial time going through e-consultations. Some interesting points have come out of the tutorials and I would like to share a few of the learning points from these and the reading that followed. It should be acknowledged that there is scope for more research, learning and guidance on the safe use of e-consultations in general practice.
