摘要

Scientific knowledge and land management in Australia can and must incorporate IEK, for the benefit of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous society. Court decisions like Bushfire Survivors shine a light on the opportunities that government bodies like the EPA have to engage with First Nations peoples in the development of objectives, guidelines and policies that meet their statutory duties and realise the value of traditional cultural practices. As government agencies seek to develop these opportunities, there is a need for observance of cultural protocols and ICIP rights, respect for IEK and appropriate attribution and benefit sharing mechanisms, and to empower Indigenous peoples and engage with Indigenous organisations so they can control and management their cultural future.
