Boeing’s Commercial Airplanes unit delivered 17 aircraft in April as an increase in 787 hand-overs was more than offset by problems in the 737 program that limited deliveries to just four and continue to keep aircraft idle. Delivering 737 MAX-family models is a key part of Boeing’s plan to improve its balance sheet. After delivering 58 in the first quarter and four in the first week of April, discovery of an electrical system issue halted new deliveries and grounded about 90 in-service models. Boeing is working on a fix for both the affected in-service fleet and more than 300 it has in storage that need fixing, as well as a production-line modification. Until that work is done and validated by the FAA—a process that requires Boeing to look beyond the immediate areas affected by the issue to ensure repairs do not create new risks—737 MAX deliveries will remain on hold.
