I was introduced to peat ('La Tourbe') in France about 10 years ago, but was nervous of contamination of the newbom's delicate digestive system. It was so easy for ten to foul the floor or flat trays on which the peat was sprinkles, and then eat the voiding. I visited Scandinavia a year later, and they said "Peat contains it and could spread it. The stuff needs to be sterilised/pasturised and that raises the cost considerably." Hearing thatone Danish Processor wouldn't accept pigs fed on it unless the peat had been sterilised rather set the seal on it for me.
