From websites that suddenly disappear to figures that do not match and data that is published with more than a year of delay, transparency in the energy sector has seriously deteriorated in Mexico since President Andrés Manuel López Obrador took office in late 2018, experts said in a virtual panel discussion Sept. 21. Although deterioration is evident across the government, it is particularly serious in the energy sector, whether it be natural gas, power, crude, or refined products, experts said during the virtual panel discussion. By not aligning themselves to international standards of accountability, state companies CFE and Pemex lose credibility which may ultimately increase their borrowing costs, the panelists said.
