As part of their efforts to help develop the next generation of energy workers, EEI's member companies are providing young people with hands-on educational opportunities that give them a taste of working in the electric power industry. Meet Connor McMillian, a 17-year-old recent graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School in Tennessee who is eager to become a lineworker. Connor completed a full-time line-worker internship with Appalachian Power, a subsidiary of American Electric Power (AEP), during his last high school summer break. "I've always been interested in line work, and thought, instead of hopping right into it, I'd do an internship to understand the work better," McMillian said. Appalachian Power's internship program was developed by Learning Coordinators Latonya Porter and Amanda McClellan, with a team that included AEP Executive Vice President of Energy Services Chris Beam, former president and chief operating officer (COO) of Appalachian Power; Appalachian Power President and COO Aaron Walker, former vice president of distribution operations; and Distribution System Manager Rob Arnold.
