From a strategic disease control standpoint, there are only two kinds of infection: those which can consistently be excluded from stock and those which cannot. Our two main methods of disease control in the commercial poultry industry reflect this --biosecurity and immunization. Biosecurity excludes or at least minimizes entry of infection, while immunization takes care of the infection which biosecurity does not stop. There are very few diseases for which biosecurity is the only means of protection. One of these is Salmonella pullorum and, in addition to biosecurity. breeding flocks are tested to ensure that the progeny start out pullorum-free.
