RCF Trombay Unit is located in Chembur area which used to be the out skirts of Mumbai city in 1960s era. As urbanization increased, the Mumbai City spread its boundaries very fast. RCF Trombay was completely dependent for supply of raw process water from Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM). As the city grew, the demand for residential and industry in and around Mumbai increased drastically and process water supply from MCGM to RCF Trombay got curtailed. RCF Trombay Unit had to explore different avenues to overcome this shortage of process water in order to survive. The other most important factor was making this fresh water from MCGM available for residents of Mumbai City and thus replacing it with other source. The article highlights the efforts of RCF, Trombay by treating the sewage of Mumbai city in its sewage treatment plant and used treated water in plant processes. This resulted in saving in a large amount of fresh water. Schemes implemented for water conservation in the plant and planned to achieve zero effluent discharge are also covered.
