Graphite milling, grinding, and machining are unique and sometimes challenging processes. Although graphite materials are more forgiving than metals, they still have their share of imperfections that can cause some problems during the machining process. Several imperfections can adversely affect graphite part quality; however, they will likely not cause the process to stop due to a broken tool. Graphite can be machined into an electrode quickly. Its processing is significantly faster than that for equivalent metallic parts, and can be loaded into grinders and mills in a multi-part scenario. A robust and well-thought-out graphite machining process is a "must-have" to produce high quality graphite electrodes. In other types of materials, preparation can be complex. In graphite machining applications, you can speed up this stage of the manufacturing process; specifically, you can take raw graphite types and sand or sawcut the preparation blanks. Once these blanks are cut, you can quickly and efficiently begin your complex machine paths in a milling center. Over the past ten years, spindle speeds have continued to increase, complementing the graphite machining process. Over the last several decades, we have proven that you can be more aggressive with your roughing operations and still obtain a chip/defect-free graphite workpiece in your finishing operation.
