The UK government will not introduce legislation specifically protecting women at work who are experiencing menopause. The announcement was included in the government's formal response to a 2022 report by the House of Commons Women and Equalities Committee (WEC) on Menopause and the workplace. While rejecting calls for new legislation, the government has accepted several of the WEC's recommendations for non-statutory changes. The WEC wanted the introduction of a protected characteristic of 'menopause' under the Equality Act 2010 (EqA), as well as a duty to provide reasonable adjustments for menopausal employees. The WEC argued that the current law meant menopause-related discrimination claims were often 'shoehorned' into claims based on the existing protected characteristics of age, sex and/or disability.
