A NEW REPORT from SWANA's Applied Research Foundation (ARF) recommends continued investigation of electric refuse and recycling vehicles through pilot projects due to their potential climate change benefits and cost savings. The report suggests fleet managers also consider the use of hydrogen fuel cells in the long-term. "Evaluation of Electricity and Other Alternative Fuels for Solid Waste and Recycling Collection Vehicles" offers timely considerations based on consistent assumptions and real-life data. Refuse and recycling collection fleet managers are facing increasing pressure to utilize alternative fuels considering growing concerns over climate change impacts of the fossil fuel-based fuels currently used to power fleets. In 2018, about 150,000 refuse trucks- the majority of which were equipped with engines running on diesel fuel-were used in the United States to collect and transport a reported 292.4 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) to recycling, recovery, or disposal facilities.
