Workforce considerations must be focused on improving population oral health. This is the second paper looking at the findings of the Dental Workforce Advisory Group (DWAG) for England, established in 2015.1 Effective self-care, together with timely access to high quality preventively orientated professional care, delivered in a coordinated manner and in strengthened health system, is important across the life-course. Part 1 of this series outlined the challenge of serving a growing population with diverse oral healthcare needs of varying complexity, and the methodology and discussions informing this work, reporting on ‘starting well’ from birth and ‘keeping well’ through the school years.2.Part 2 of the series continues the oral health journey across the life-course to consider ‘maintaining well’ through adult life and the importance of ‘sustaining well’ into older age to finally ‘end well’, ideally with an extended life span. It concludes with a discussion about the implications for the nature of the future workforce, systems, and supporting activities including education, training and research.
