摘要

The Royal Academy of Engineering champions world class UK innovation and entrepreneurship and aims to support and nurture new engineering technologies that could help to boost the nation's economy. One of the ways it does this is through the MacRobert Award for engineering innovation, inaugurated in 1969 to celebrate UK engineering developments that demonstrate outstanding engineering innovation, commercial success and tangible social benefits. The roll call of previous MacRobert Award winners evidences the global impact of British engineering over more than half a century. From the CT scanner in 1972, invented by Sir Godfrey Hounsfield and his team at EMI, to the laser retinal scanner in 2006, developed by Dr Douglas Anderson, founder of Optos - both these technologies are now used around the world in hospitals and opticians respectively and have each helped to revolutionise diagnostic imaging. Our 2022 winner, Quanta Dialysis Technologies, has made portable, high-performance dialysis a reality and is set for growing success in the coming years.
