Achieving ambitious public policy agendas through "Power by Association" is more than just a goal for EEI-it's central to our purpose as an organization. Our member companies-America's investor-owned electric companies-are leading a profound clean energy transformation, requiring investment and innovation on a truly massive scale. Our industry's capital investments of more than $120 billion each year are crucial for a carbon-free economy. Yet, as we long have advocated to policymakers inside the Beltway and around the nation, they alone are not enough. While we have reduced carbon emissions from the U.S. power sector to the lowest level since 1984 (with electricity use up 72 percent since then), and we have made enormous strides in strengthening and hardening the energy grid, federal support is needed to fully realize our vision for America's resilient clean energy.
