She is a prolific writer of scientificpublications as well as of popular science books and magazinearticles on topics related to the marine environment. Her currentbook is divided into a Prelude, four parts with several sections, andan Epilogue. In the Prelude, Scales describes her experiences on the researchvessel Pelican on which she served as one of 10 marine scientists conductingstudies in the deep sea of the Gulf of Mexico. She stressesthe importance of the oceans for human lives as well as the urgencyto better understand the deep ocean, stating: “What lies far belowthe surface has long remained out of sight and usually out of mind. Now, though, humanity's close ties to the oceans are sinking deeper. This is without a doubt a golden era for deep-seaexploration”.
