Preston has been reporting on the rollercoaster that is nickel pricing ever since the start of the pandemic and the continuation of nickel challenges brought about by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The nickel situation is not over. In a recent article published by the Nickel Institute, it was noted that nickelcontaining steel will be an important part of another technology that Preston has been writing about – carbon capture. In the article, it is noted that many CCS processes involve low temperatures with free water present resulting in acidic conditions and the risk of corrosion. In addition, carbon capture from gases often contains moisture from the combustion process making it corrosive. In addition to the capture process, transportation and sequestration will involve the use of nickel-containing steel. Data from well design in the US and the EU show that nickel-containing stainless steel and nickel alloys are typically selected for critical well infrastructure.
