The window business began cooling down in 2021 after a stretch of outstanding of growth. Although demand was still healthy in the first half of 2021, supply chain bottlenecks prevented retailers from taking full advantage of sales opportunities.Business began to slow later in the year. And within the specialty store sector, Bed Bath Beyond's cratering sales trajectory provided an additional drag. When all was said and done, total 2021 retail sales for the window category inched up 1.8 to $3.24 billion. For comparison, total window category sales climbed 11 in 2020.For the first nine months of 2022, the business is facing the same hurdles as every other part of the home textiles industry: an overabundance of merchandise at retail, consumer concerns about inflation and higher costs."The window category had a tremendous amount of business pulled forward over the past two years," noted Amy Hanlon, executive vice president at Lichtenberg. "During this down trend, however, consumers have traveled, spent on entertainment and wellness. They are now cyclically coming back inside the home for another refresh, and we see the window category heading into an upswing."
