Bonsucro, the leading global platform for sustainable sugarcane, held its biggest-ever event - Bonsucro Global Week 2022, in Ribeirao Preto, Brazil, in October. The 250 strong audience was diverse - representing actors across the whole sugarcane supply chain from 25 countries. Sugarcane is an important crop - it contributes to national economies, provides work for many local communities, and its derivatives offer interesting alternatives to fossil fuels. The event called for the sector to work together to become more sustainable - to change for good. Joaquim Leite, Brazil's Minister of Environment, Duarte Nogueire, the Mayor of Ribeirao Preto, and Carolina Matos, Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply for the State of Sao Paulo, all spoke at the event, showing high-level support for sustainability in the sugarcane sector in Brazil. Several speakers reiterated that Bonsucro plays a key role in transforming the sugarcane sector. Eduardo Leao de Sousa from UNICA, the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry and Bioenergy Association said that of the magnitude of voluntary certification systems, "the most important among them is Bonsucro." Bonsucro's CEO, Danielle Morley, shared how Bonsucro has extended its reach over the last few years, with more than 1.5 million hectares of land certified against Bonsucro standards. While this expansion has translated into positive social and environmental outcomes for workers, growers and mills, more work is needed to futureproof the sector.
