You probably know more than a few people who shop for compact discs at CDNow, books at Amazon.com and their favorite trinkets at ebay—instead of physically visiting the old haunts, or "bricks-and-mortar" stores, at which they used to shop. But drycleaning relies on what logistically is a complex—not to mention cumbersome—transaction. If you buy a novel at Amazon.com with your credit card, the company is responsible for the delivery of one small item. In drycleaning, goods are exchanged at both ends of the transaction, and constraints of time and weight make them impossible to ship, even by FedEx.
