Bundrant’s legacy: Seattle-based Trident Seafoods Corp, has processing plants all around Alaska. The flagship is the huge plant on Akutan Island, 35 miles east of Dutch Harbor. The remote Akutan plant is the largest seafood production facility in North America and "entirely self-reliant," Trident says on its website. More than 1,000 employees work there during peak seasons. The plant's main focus is turning pollock into surimiand other goods. It also processes other species such as cod and crab.Akutan is both a good and bad place for a processing plant. It was built in 1981 on a site blasted out of a mountainside. Traveling to or from Akutan is inconvenient. On the plus side, the plant is hours closer to rich Bering Sea fishing grounds than the competing, Japanese-owned plants at Dutch Harbor.
