For most inland boaters the Kennet Avon represents one of the longest dead-ends anywhere on the network, at not far short of 100 miles long. Not that there's anything wrong with deadends, mind you - some of my favourite waterways are cul-de-sacs. But once you've turned off the Thames at Reading, unless you're one of the intrepid few who are prepared to make the adventurous tidal trip from Bristol via Avonmouth to Sharpness, you know that eventually you'll be coming back there the same way.
