PJM Interconnection said July 21 that changes to its long-termtransmission planning process are needed to ensure reliabilitybecause the former approach is too simplistic and does notaccount for challenges like rapid generator retirements andpower demand growth from electrification efforts.“We have been talking about reforming the long-termtransmission planning process for over a year, created a newScenario Analysis and Special Studies Department, and this isthe next evolution to put meat on the changes to the planningprocess,” David Souder, PJM’s director of operations planning, said during a Long-Term Regional Transmission PlanningWorkshop that was held in person and remotely. The intent of these workshops is to talk through changesto PJM’s transmission planning framework, get stakeholderfeedback and put clarifications in the PJM rule manual,Souder said.
