The implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) could push EU steel import prices up by 15pc, according to Italian steel and scrap association Assofermet. The European Commission's proposed CBAM aims to prevent “carbon leakage”, occurring when companies based in the EU move their carbon-intensive production to countries with more relaxed regulations. The CBAM transition period is set to start on 1 October, while the full implementation of the policy will begin on 1 January 2026.
