摘要

Abstract The main purpose of an audible fire alarm signal is to notify occupants of the presence of signs of a fire and to promote escape behavior, such as immediate evacuation. This study investigates audible fire alarm signal conditions that promote the most appropriate escape behavior. Four standard signals—alarm bell, horn, chime, and electronic siren—were selected as the fire alarm signals. Furthermore, a temporal-three pattern, recorded female voice, and transmitted signal were applied to each of the four signals. Using these signals, a jury evaluation test was conducted for a total of 76 participants between 19 and 36?years of age. The recollection, identification, and perceived urgency of each signal, along with the conditions that promote and appropriate escape behavior, were statistically assessed. For each signal condition, frequency analysis, correlation analysis, independent sample t-tests, and one-way analysis of variance were performed. Results indicate that there was a correlation between signal identification and appropriate escape behavior. Furthermore, an alarm bell signal with a recorded female voice was determined to be the most appropriate fire alarm signal.
