摘要

They’re here now and spreading in New York state so we’re hearing a lot about the spotted lantemflies! The name is misleading: Spotted lantemflies have little in common with any type of fly. In fact, when they are in their adult stage they look morelike moths. Spotted lantemflies are actually planthoppers in the order Hemiptera, or true bugs, and are related to cicadas, brown marmorated stink bugs, aphids, and leafhoppers. All insects in this order have piercing-sucking mouthparts which allow them to tap into the phloem of a plant to feed directly on the sugary sap.
