European natural gas prices surged to new highs on Friday as Russian gas giant Gazprom said it would halt gas exports to Germany via the Nord Stream pipeline for three days of maintenance work starting Aug. 31. Gazprom — controlled by the Russian government — said the outage was necessary to carry out maintenance work on the only one of six turbines that can still be used at the pipeline's Portovaya compressor station in Russia.
