For decades, the diet heart hypothesis has guided nutrition recommendations and policy. Recent research have cast doubt on the notion and spurred heated debate aboutthe supposed link between saturated fat consumption and heart disease. Recent evidencesuggests that dietary advice should focus on dietary patterns rather than a single food or vitamin. Furthermore, categorizing foods solely as saturated, polyunsaturated, or monounsaturated fats ignores the many other nutrients and health advantages available. Coconut is a saturated fat, therefore it's on the list of foods to avoid if you want to lower your risk of heart disease. In her study, Susan Hewling, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Central Michigan University, found that various saturatedfats, whether medium-chain or long-chain, behave differently in the body and have different health effects.
