Colombia’s president Gustavo Petro has issued a series of decrees to protect the coal-producing department of La Guajira, including banning new coal mines, prohibiting expansion of existing mining concessions, and forbidding the extension of new exploitation areas at existing coal projects. This implies that the administration will not allow the expansion of Cerrejon's coal mine in the La Puente pit, which the Colombian mining firm sees as crucial for maintaining its output in the years ahead. The decision also bans the development of new coal mines in San Juan, Canaverales and Papayal, controlled by the Turkish Yildirim Group.
