Crabbing update: Much of the West Coast has seen reduced Dungeness crab landings this year, with California's catch dropping severely. As of May 4, California's total landings amounted to about 3.5 million pounds valued at $18.7 million. The central area had a strong majority of the total catch, with 2.7 million pounds of landings valued at $12.7 million.Overall, the state's crab haul falls far short of last season, when 13 million pounds were landed by April 1, totaling $43.8 million.Due to whale migration and entanglement risks, California's commercial Dungeness fishery was set to close statewide on June 1.The season does offer some positive news - according to a May 11 report from California's Risk Assessment and Mitigation Program, there has been only one whale entanglement this season. The gear involved hasn't been linked to a specific fishery.
