摘要

UK supermajor Shell this week took the final investment decision on a major project that will see discoveries offshore Brunei being exploited via existing production facilities offshore Malaysia. Developing the Geronggong and Jagus East deep-water discoveries, made around a decade ago, via a maritime boundary-crossing subsea tie-back to Shell's Gumusut-Kakap existing production facilities, has only become possible following the April 2021 unitisation of the reservoirs that straddle the two nation's waters. Malaysia's national energy company Petronas at the time said the formalised unitisation "firmly attests the continuing collaboration" between the two Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) neighbours". Malaysia and Thailand -another of the 10-member Asean bloc - for decades have enjoyed oil and gas production from three offshore blocks in their Joint Development Area,. unlocking volumes that might otherwise have remained in reservoirs below contested waters.
