Southern California Edison's (SCE's) San Joaquin Valley Affordable Energy Pilot demonstrates how increased electrification of homes and businesses promotes energy efficiency and reduces carbon emissions, while also providing customers the electricity they need to power their daily lives. SCE's pilot is helping customers in three rural communities in California's San Joaquin Valley-a region that is vulnerable to the harshest effects of climate change, but one with limited access to clean energy resources-to convert to all-electric homes. In 2018, the California Public Utilities Commission approved a proposal for SCE to spend $14.5 million to convert approximately 450 customers to all-electric homes by providing energy-efficient electric appliances, minor home repairs, and electrical upgrades. Electrifying homes and businesses is an important component of plans to achieve California's clean energy goals, which aim for an 80-percent reduction of greenhouse gases below 1990 levels by 2050.
