In planning the issues of (mt), the editorial board tries to identify subject matter themes across the range of interests of our readership. From time to time, we choose to focus on a geographical region, rather than a specific technological sector. In this issue, our focus is on the North Sea. The North Sea is more than 600 miles long and 360 miles wide, and is surrounded by the countries of northwest Europe: the United Kingdom, Norway, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France. It connects to the Atlantic Ocean through the English Channel in the south and the Norwegian Sea in the north. The North Sea provides maritime access to the North Atlantic, the Baltic, and several of the great rivers of Europe. It has supported substantial fisheries for many centuries, provided maritime connectivity for neighboring countries, and, more recently, has proved to be a major source of energy resources, including fossil fuels and renewables such as wind, wave, and tidal power. The countries of the North Sea have major academic and research institutions supporting the maritime sector and these countries maintain high quality manufacturing of specialty ships and marine equipment.
