As America's largest source of carbon-free electricity, nuclear energy plays a vital role in sustaining a clean, diverse, and reliable energy mix for electricity customers. EEI's member companies remain focused on getting the energy they provide as clean as they can as fast as they can, without compromising customer reliability or affordability, and advanced nuclear energy is a carbon-free technology that holds great promise. (Learn how the Carbon-Free Technology Initiative is supporting public policies to spur research and development RD of advanced nuclear and other technologies in the March/April 2021 issue of EP.) Southern Company is one of several EEI member companies evaluating the potential of various types of advanced nuclear reactors. In November, Southern Company and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) agreed to design, construct, and operate the Molten Chloride Reactor Experiment (MCRE)-the world's first critical fast-spectrum salt reactor, designed to provide operational data to unlock this flexible technology for use in a net-zero future.
