The invention will modify the compression ratio of an engine to achieve high exhaust temperatures to cause engine particulate filter regeneration. Engines that have a particulate filter periodically need to regenerate that filter due to soot loading. Regeneration is the process of heating up the particulate filter above 600 C, so that the soot can be combusted. Variable compression ratio engines can modify the compression ratio at any speed/load of an engine, by lowering the compression ratio, the exhaust temperatures increase.
