UK-The recently confirmed closures of two plants, with a combined tire-making history of over 140 years, shows different approaches to this necessary, though often traumatic, aspect of managing the lifecy-cle of any industrial facility.Michelin actually announced the closure of its 845-employ-ee Dundee plant in November 2018 but was to continue operations there until mid-2020.However,it has decided not to restart the plant, after shutting it down on 23 March in line with Covid-19 restrictions. The Scottish site, which opened in 1971,manufactured only 16-inch and smaller tires for passenger cars, the market for which has faced serious difficulties in recent years.
