Spanish authorities, workers' unions, and court-appointed administrators are involved in ongoing talks with the declared objective of finding an investor willing to rescue Abengoa as a viable economic entity in the weeks remaining before the company's assets are liquidated to pay off creditors. A Spanish industry source confirmed to GWI that a number of Spanish companies are studying the acquisition of Abengoa's desalination assets. The company's equity stakes in a number of desalination plants have officially been up for sale for a number of years, but closure has been elusive, even where buyers have appeared - as in the case of the Accra plant in Ghana and the Chennai plant in India. Abengoa's travails have led to the loss of at least one EPC contract, for the Fortaleza SWRO plant in Brazil, which was swept up by IDE in June this year (see story pxx). GWI has learned, however, that the EPC contract for the expansion of the Tan-Tan BWRO in Morocco, which Abengoa won in March 2022, is currently still valid.
