Founded in 1972 to preserve some of the remaining steam locomotives used by New Zealand Railways, Steam Incorporated occupied the locomotive depot at Paekakariki as its base, and still operates from that base. Now one of the major rail travel groups in New Zealand, we showcase some of their locomotives, carriages and tours they have organised over the last 50 years. Above: A view of the Paekakariki base in March 1976 when an open day was held. In those days steam was banned from the main line and so steam locomotives could only run through the yard, carrying passengers in the cab. On the left is J1211 and on the right K~A945. Below: One of the major steam excursions organised was the Pan Pacific Vintage Car Rally held in Palmerston North in February 1992. One popular trip was from Palmerston North to Horopito where car enthusiasts were able to visit Smash Palace and buy car parts. K~A945 heads that train through Hunterville bound for Horopito on 13 February.
