摘要

Following President Eisenhower's "Atoms for Peace" speech in 1953, and after receiving congressional approval in 1956, the 22,000-ton passenger and cargo ship NS Savannah was constructed, tested, and delivered for service in 1962 to demonstrate the application of nuclear technology to merchant shipping. By the time it was deactivated in 1970, the Savannah had traveled over 450,000 miles, called at 32 domestic and 45 foreign ports in 26 nations, carried 848 passengers, and hosted over 1.4 million visitors, all while powered by only 163 pounds of enriched uranium. The Savannah is now berthed in Baltimore, Md., and is undergoing decommissioning and decontamination. In-person tours of the ship have been offered during previous ANS meetings, but in 2021, the ANS Washington, D.C., Section, the N.S. Savannah Association, and the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) joined forces to create a virtual tour of the Savannah that debuted on December 4 during the 2021 ANS Winter Meeting. The 82-minute video tour takes viewers deep inside the ship with extensive video footage and expert commentary.
