This short case study describes a small project in Mbale district, Uganda, on which I challenged the client’s brief in order to realise the concept of ‘building less and building clever’. The client had an existing single-storey residential house which he wanted to modify as described in his brief: Change the current gable-end roof to a hipped-end roof. Replace the existing iron sheets due to organic staining caused by nearby tree branches. Replace the expanded metal lath ceiling with gypsum boards. Construct a guest wing with a steel truss roof alongside the existing house.
