2022 Key View: The regulatory focus for foods that are High in saturated Fat, Sugar and Salt (HFSS) will shift and expand beyond labelling in 2022. The UK is a first mover in this trend, but other nations are likely to explore their own laws, as seen with other food regulations. In the UK, regulation in 2022 will restrict the advertising, placement in store and promotion of HFSS products. Mid-Year Review: The heightened inflationary pressure being faced by consumers globally and the economic environment in the UK, which has been termed, ‘the cost of living crisis’ has led the UK government to postpone its planned 2022 roll out of regulation to restrict the promotion of HFSS products (restrictions on the placement of HFSS foods in stores will go-ahead as planned in October 2022) and the planned advertising restrictions. This is, however, a deferral, as opposed to a cancelation of this trend and we believe that over the medium term (2022-2026), as inflationary pressures weaken, the UK will move ahead with this regulation and other countries will look to follow.
