The invention is a multi-layer coating system is disclosed. The coating system consists of (in order of deposition): Base layer: Chromium, 1-5 μm thick, for substrate adhesion and barrier corrosion protection. Top layer: Dichromium nitride, 1-5μm thick, for high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance. The coating is applied using a vapor deposition method, such as physical vapor deposition (PVD).The coating allows substrates (e.g.: carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, or others) to resist simultaneous high temperatures and corrosive media, including conditions experienced by fuel injectors, particularly diesel fuel injectors, which may experience higher temperatures and more acidic conditions.
