Measuring objects takes as many different tools as it does to make parts. Measuring simple prismatic parts like plates and blocks requires scales, calipers, and micrometers. More advanced 3D parts with angles and curves require more advanced measuring tools. If you have really deep pockets, you can afford a $ 100k to $250k vision or gantry-based coordinate measuring machine, then you have everything you would ever need to measure practically anything. For the sake of argument, let's assume you have a budget but you still need to measure a complicated 3D part. In the past you would have gotten a shadow graph or optical comparator with a digital readout. Now you might purchase an articulated measuring arm, so let's look at how they work and how to use them.
