Kershaw et al. (2018) recognized four major features of Palaeozoic stromatoporoids applicable to understanding controls on their growth: (1) relationship to substrate, (2) growth history and importance of growth interruption events, (3) nature of their relationship with associated organisms, and (4) relationship between growth form and taxonomy. Evidence of the impacts of these four on development of British Silurian stromatoporoids is recognizable in the dataset studied here for most of the taxa found.
