Anyone who's followed weather during the past couple of decades has noticed that heat waves have been taking a renewed interest in the western United States. Drought conditions out west began around 2007 and have persisted over the past 15 years since then. In June 2021, we saw an unprecedented heat wave in the northwest region, with Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, and the interior valleys reaching as high as 121 ℉. A series of heat waves followed in summer 2022 in the Great Basin area. This culminated in the great California heat wave of September 2022 which we cover in this edition of Forecast Center.
