Management struggles are everywhere—all the time. Executives tout what they think they are doing well and ghost everything else. But the outcome is mediocre at best and much too often weak-to-horrible. But management failure has two faces. The first is the gap between abstract management principles and management best practices. The second is the inability to implement best practices. It is impossible to manage well when no one understands the gap between principles and best practices, and when no one can implement management best practices. This is why management at all levels—as well as our expectations about management—fail so often. The distance between what and how has never been greater, and the ability to actually do-the-how—even when we know what it is—continues to escape even the most dedicated executives (and things are no better in technology land).
