WHEN IT COMES to safety, OSHA sets broad regulatory standards. Yes, I know that many States work under their own state safety program, as opposed to following federal OSHA. Further, many government jurisdictions (cities, counties, waste authorities, etc.) are exempt and not technically bound to follow OSHA rules. How would you like to explain that "technicality" to the family of a worker killed at your facility? Neither would I. Yet I still hear this argument throughout the waste industry. The fact is, you and I-all of us, are bound by a higher standard to keep workers and customers safe- Period. It's about ethics, morality, responsibility, and the value of human life. All of us, and especially those in a supervisory position have a duty to keep workers and others safe.
