SOME BUTTERFLIES ARE PRONE TO LONG-distance migration and therefore to vagrancy at a considerable distance beyond their normal range. The UK has its share of vagrant butterflies but proving natural unassisted vagrancy is generally impossible. The occurrence of a male Lang’s shorttailed blue (a migratory species that visits European regions from North Africa) found in mid-October in a house in Three Mile Cross, Berkshire, by Claire Hawkins and identified by Aaron Soli on iNaturalist helps illustrate the challenge well.
