After sustained growth in 2021, retail sales in across bedding landed with a thud last year. To put 2022 into perspective, consider the wild ride that preceded it. Sheet sales in 2021 grew 4 on top of a 12 gain in 2020. Top-of-bed added 2 in 2021 after surging 16 in 2020. Utility bedding generated a healthy 6 increase in 2021 on top of a 26.6 spike in 2020 sales. So, a return to earth wasn't unexpected after the frenzied pace of business over the previous two years. The surpise twist was the abrupt drop-off that arrived a few weeks into the new year. Deliveries long delayed by the supply chain snarl in 2021 washed ashore in early 2022 just as inflation began rising and consumers pivoted their spending away from general merchandise shopping -and home goods in particular. The through line from suppliers across the bedding industry is that business in 2022 fell sharply year over year but rose ever so slightly compared 2019. Imports fell dramatically as the pace of ordering pulled back. In sheets, for example, 2022 unit volume dropped 17 for cotton sheet imports and tumbled nearly 24 for manmade fiber constructions.
