The 2020 Murrough P. O'Brien award winner was Scott Douglass, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus at the University of South Alabama and founder and president of South Coast Engineers. The following interview was conducted by Maro Pontiki of the ASBPA Students and New Professionals Committee. What made you pursue a career in coastal engineering? I grew up and lifeguarded on beaches and then once I found out I could study and engineer them, it was a done deal. I love beaches. Who are the people who most influenced your work in coastal engineering or were the inspiration for your career? Many people have influenced my work in coastal engineering. Many of the folks at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Coastal Engineering Research Center, both when it was in Virginia and then later in Mississippi in the early 1980s were great engineers and scientists. I have fond memories of dozens of those colleagues.
