Our car friend Bruce Wilson owned an SS-badged and 348-powered 1961 Chevrolet Impala in the early 2000s. But, like the author and so many other "baby boomers," it is the 1962 Impala SS that Bruce remembers as a defining vehicle of his car-obsessed youth. "The truly exciting cars were the 1962 Super Sports that one could readily buy," Bruce recalls. "I was 12 then and got all excited just to see the crossed flags on the front fenders signifying a 327 engine! Then the red SS badging and special wheel covers. The final thing I looked for was a four-speed shifter between bucket seats! It wasn't long before I started seeing 409 numerals over the crossed flags-sensory overload! There weren't many domestic cars during the early Sixties that turned me on like Super Sport Chevrolets!"
